Andrei Kanchelskis joined Everton from Manchester United for £5 million in August 1995 as the Blues sought to build on a strong finish to the 1994/95 which saw Joe Royle’s side stave off relegation and win the FA Cup.
His only full season at the club was a spectacular success as he scored 16 Premier League goals, including both strikes in a 2-1 win at Anfield. His form brought him to the attention of a number of European clubs but this interest in him led to a dip in performances. A few days before his move to Fiorentina for £8 million, Kanchelskis had made an error which led to Chris Waddle scoring a brilliant goal as Bradford knocked Everton out of the FA Cup.
Manager Royle said: “I felt that Andrei’s not been right in his mind for us this season. He became unsettled and it was inevitable in the end that he moved on. It’s sad to see him go and I thank him for last season.”
