On This Day – January 27th 2001
Both teams were struggling in their respective Leagues, but Premier League Everton were expected to see off their Division One neighbours Tranmere. In the end, it proved to be one of the lowest points of manager Walter Smith’s reign as the side managed by Liverpool legend John Aldridge were thoroughly deserving winners.
The visitors were 2-0 to the good at half-time thanks to goals from Steve Yates and the much sought-after Jason Koumas, and the humiliation was complete when Yates grabbed his second midway through the second period.
Giantkillers Tranmere did it again in the next round, coming from 3-0 down at half-time to beat Southampton 4-3 with Everton FA Cup hero Paul Rideout scoring a hat-trick and another former Blue Stuart Barlow also on target. The exciting Rovers run came to an end in the quarter-final, though, as Liverpool beat them 4-2 at Prenton Park.
