On This Day – January 21st 1933

This match was played on a bitterly cold January day on a heavily-sanded pitch, prompting one reporter to say it resembled New Brighton beach.

Jack Thompson opened the scoring for the home side and Tommy Johnson made it 2-0 after good work by Albert Geldard. Dixie Dean headed home the third from a Jimmy Stein corner kick and then Stein himself scored direct from a corner to make the half-time score 4-0.

The visitors started the second period well as Everton sat back but they soon fell 5-0 behind as Stein turned provider for Dixie again and midway through the half Jimmy Dunn smashed home the sixth. Sunderland grabbed a consolation goal shortly afterwards from the penalty spot after Dunn was harshly judged to have handled the ball.
