On This Day – January 20th 1996

Ian Wright ALWAYS scored for Arsenal when the Gunners played Everton but on this occasion the Blues were able to bounce back from going 1-0 down to record a first victory at Highbury since 1987.

Wright’s brilliant solo goal gave Bruce Rioch’s side the advantage but Joe Royle’s men showed their intent two minutes into the second period when David Seaman pushed Daniel Amokachi’s shot onto the bar. Two minutes later, though, and the visitors drew level when top scorer Graham Stuart rounded Seaman to slot the ball home.

From that moment, the game swung from end to end with chances for both sides, but it was Everton who finally took one eight minutes from time, Andrei Kancheskis crashing a left foot shoot across Seaman and into the net.

Everton had been flirting with relegation when Joe Royle took over but he transformed the club’s fortunes, winning the FA Cup in 1995 and leading the Blues to a respectable sixth spot in the table at the end of the 1995/96 season.
