On This Day – January 18th 1998
Coming into this match, Chelsea were second in the Premier League table while Everton were flirting (again) with the relegation places. Despite falling behind to a Tore Andre Flo goal, the Blues showed tremendous character to battle back and turn the game on its head.
Gary Speed brought the home side level just two minutes after Flo’s strike, prodding the ball home after Mickael Madar’s header was blocked on the line. Duncan Ferguson put Howard Kendall’s side ahead just after the hour mark, heading the ball into the net from Nick Barmby’s corner, and the big Scotsman’s pressure forced defender Michael Duberry to slice into his own net to make it 3-1 with eight minutes remaining.
Rumours had been circulating that Gary Speed was unhappy with the direction the club was travelling and a few weeks later he was sold to Newcastle for a fee of £6 million.
