On This Day – January 17th 1987

Everton kept up the pressure on League leaders Arsenal with this victory over Sheffield Wednesday, moving to within a point of the Gunners though having played a game more.

The first goal came after 15 minutes, Trevor Steven despatching a penalty given for handball, and just after the half-hour mark it was 2-0, Dave Watson heading home his first goal for the club since his £900,000 transfer from Norwich at the start of the campaign.

Watson was replaced at the interval due to injury, allowing new signing Ian Snodin – an £840,000 aquisition from Leeds United earlier in the month – to make his debut. The pattern of play in the second period was the same as the first, with Howard Kendall’s side totally dominant and only the good form of former Everton player Martin Hodge in the Wednesday goal keeping the scoreline respectable.
