On This Day – December 6th 1986

Full-back Gary Stevens made a welcome return to the Everton line-up after a lengthy injury lay-off, while the visitors were facing an injury crisis of their own as nine senior players were sidelined leaving only thirteen fit players.

The versatile Paul Power grabbed his first goal at Goodison on 18 minutes to give the Blues the lead and ten minutes later Trevor Steven made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. It was one-way traffic in the second half too, but the home side had to wait until the 78th minute mark to score again thanks to Neil Pointon and Adrian Heath completed the rout a minute later with a superb volley.

The return fixture at Carrow Road on a Bank Holiday Monday in May the next year would see Everton reclaim the Division One title from Liverpool, with Pat Van Den Hauwe scoring the solitary goal, and the Blues ultimately finished nine points clear of their Merseyside rivals at the top.
