On This Day – September 27th 2014

Coming into the first Merseyside derby of the 2014-15 season, both teams were languishing in mid-table, with Liverpool 12th on 7 points from 6 games and the Blues 13th on 6 points from 6 games.

There had been an incredible League Cup game at Anfield a few days earlier in which Brendan Rogers side drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough but went through after winning the penalty shootout 14-13, and there were a flurry of incidents at the start of the game which could have added to that tally.

The home side generally had the better of play without creating many clear-cut chances, but on 65 minutes they went ahead through, who else, Steven Gerrard. After Leighton Baines had fouled Mario Balotelli (who I’d forgotten ever played for them) on the edge of the box, the Liverpool talisman curled a brilliant free-kick beyond Tim Howard.

The visitors offered little going forward and a defeat seemed inevitable as the clock ticked into injury time. But, latching onto a cleared corner, defender Phil Jagielka hit an unstoppable half-volley from 30 yards into the net, leaving goalkeeper Simon Mignolet helpless. Queue pandemonium in the Anfield Road end!
