On This Day – September 25th 1976

Defences were mostly on top in this dour encounter, with First Division newcomers Bristol City generally giving as good as they got. But seventeen minutes from time, Martin Dobson’s header was deflected by Gerry Gow over City ‘keeper Ray Cashley to give the Blues the lead and two minutes from time, Bob Latchford made the game safe from close range – ‘Big Bob’s’ seventh goal in nine games.

A workmanlike performance was summed up by manager Billy Bingham: “They worked hard and made it difficult for us but in the end we got the goals.” The win saw Everton in sixth place in the table with eight points from seven games, two behind leaders Liverpool.

However, a run of eight games without a win resulted in Bingham being sacked in January 1977 and replaced by Gordon Lee.
