On This Day – September 22nd 2012

Everton began the 2012-13 season in fine style by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the first game of the campaign, Marouane Fellaini scoring. The Blues than defeated Aston Villa 3-1 away, thanks to first half-half goals by Steven Pienaar, Fellaini again and Nicica Jelavic, before suffering a 2-0 reverse at West Brom. An injury-time equaliser by Demba Ba, then of Newcastle, deprived David Moyes side all-three points against Newcastle so, coming into this match, the team were seventh in the Premier League table on seven points.

Swansea had also started the season well with the same points tally as the visitors from their opening four games and were unbeaten at home, but the Blues were at them from the start and took a deserved lead through Victor Anichebe on 21 minutes, though there was a hint of handball by Marouane Fellaini in the build up.

The Blues doubled their advantage just before half-time after a sweeping move involving Phil Neville, Fellaini and Pienaar was nodded home by Kevin Mirallas.

Any fightback from Swansea in the second period was effectively nullified as Nathan Dyer, on as a substitute for Pablo Hernandez, was sent off for two bookings acquired within a minute of each other just before the hour mark. Fellaini grabbed the inevitable third goal eight minutes from time and the three points moved the Blues into second place in the table, three points behind leaders Chelsea.

Everton finished the season on 63 points, enough for sixth spot and one place above Liverpool. The last match of the David Moyes era was a 2-1 defeat to Europa League winners Chelsea, managed by a certain Rafael Benitez who had taken over on a temporary basis from Roberto Di Matteo back in November, so this was also his final game in charge.

Moyes said: “It’s emotional because it’s the last time I walk away from the players but part of the job is you move on. It’s rare to stay in a job for 11 years so I’m thankful for getting that opportunity and hopeful they’re in a strong position to push on.”
